Berbeda dengan bentuk instead, instead of berfungsi sebagai preposisi. Sebagai preposisi, sudah pasti selalu diikuti oleh kata benda. Sebagai preposisi, instead of paling pas diartikan dengan “daripada” meskipun di dalam kamus-kamus seperti Oxford dan Webster memberi definisi yang sama antara instead dan instead of dengan: : in the place of somebody/something.
